About Our Speakers

Eric Horvitz, M.D., Ph.D.

Eric Horvitz is Chief Scientific Officer at Microsoft, where he leads initiatives at the intersection of science, technology, and society, with emphases on AI, medicine, and the biosciences. His research has advanced artificial intelligence through innovations in perception, learning, and decision-making. He is a recipient of the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize and ACM Allen Newell Award for his scientific contributions in AI. Beyond Microsoft, he has advised scientific and governmental organizations on issues spanning science, technology, and public policy, including serving on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). He established Stanford’s One Hundred Year Study on AI and co-founded the AI Index. Eric is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Philosophical Society. He earned his Ph.D. and M.D. at Stanford University.

Mike Miles

Mike Miles was appointed Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District 2023, and left his position as the CEO of Third Future Schools, a network of high-quality public schools in Colorado and Texas that he founded in 2016. Prior to his latest work, Mike served three years as the Superintendent of Dallas ISD and six years as the Superintendent of the Harrison School District in Colorado Springs. Superintendent Miles has also served the public interest as a soldier and statesman. He led soldiers as a Company Commander in the Army and also served in the elite Ranger Battalion. Mike later worked at the U.S. State Department as a Soviet analyst and member of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. He then served as a Diplomat to Poland and Russia at the end of the Cold War. He holds degrees from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the University of California at Berkeley, and Columbia University.

Annie Duke, Ph.D.

Annie Duke is a decision strategist, author, and speaker specializing in decision-making under uncertainty. A former professional poker player with over $4 million in tournament winnings, she is the only woman to have won both the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions and the NBC National Poker Heads-Up Championship before retiring in 2012.

Now a Special Partner at First Round Capital, she is focused on decision science and is a consultant in the decision-making space. She is the best selling author of Thinking in Bets and Quit: The Power of Knowing When to Walk Away (2022).

Annie holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she also teaches executive education. She co-founded the Alliance for Decision Education, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering students with essential decision-making skills. Additionally, she serves on the boards of After-School All-Stars and the Franklin Institute.

David Samuelson

Moderator

David Samuelson serves as the Executive Director at the Alliance for Decision Education. A longtime advocate for Decision Education, David served on the Alliance’s Advisory Council for more than a decade. His extensive education sector experience includes market-leading initiatives across K-12, higher education, and professional learning worldwide—directly aligning with the Alliance’s mission to improve lives by empowering students with essential skills and dispositions for making better decisions. He believes that decision-making skills are more critical than ever as all of us, especially young people, navigate an increasingly complex, AI-enabled world.

As a certified executive coach through the Hudson Institute of Coaching, David combines strategic leadership with a people-first approach. His career spans education technology, digital learning, and consumer media, where he has consistently delivered results by combining strategic vision with disciplined execution. Most recently, he served as CEO of ISACA, a global association of IT professionals, where he led a cultural and digital transformation while growing revenues from $80 million to $100 million.

Nearly half (41%) of 6.8 million job postings explicitly reference decision-making skills.

68% of computer and math roles, 55% of management positions, and 44% of skilled trades seek decision skills.

Employers offer wage premiums of up to 23% for roles requiring strong decision skills.
