Lesson Plan

Thinking Probabilistically

  • Learn what it means to think probabilistically how it impacts decision-making.

Students will develop foundational skills in probabilistic thinking, enabling them to better assess uncertainties, evaluate risks, and make evidence-based decisions. Through practical scenarios and group discussions, they will learn to apply probability concepts to real-world situations, enhancing their ability to make more informed choices in the face of uncertainty.

TP.1- Recognize the difference between the nature of uncertainty and randomness.

TP.2- Strategically apply appropriate numeracy and probability techniques.

TP.3- Use probabilistic thinking to evaluate evidence and truth claims, and to update beliefs.

TP.4- Use probabilistic thinking when making predictions and evaluating real-world contexts.

TP.5- Use probabilistic thinking to weigh decision options and their possible outcomes.

Lesson:

Engage (10 minutes):

  • Start by asking the students: “Have you ever tried to predict the outcome of something uncertain? How did you make that prediction?”
  • Engage in a brief class discussion about predicting uncertain outcomes and introduce the concept of thinking probabilistically.
  • On the whiteboard, write down the definition of probability: “Probability is the measure of the likelihood of an event occurring.”
  • Explain that thinking probabilistically involves using probabilities to make predictions, decisions, and judgments, especially when dealing with uncertain situations.

Apply (35 minutes):

Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

Thinking Probabilistically Slides

Activity 1 (25 minutes)

  • Distribute index cards or small pieces of paper to each student.
  • Provide a set of probability impact scenarios to the class (prepared in advance). Each scenario should describe a decision-making situation where probabilities play a role.
  • Instruct students to read the scenarios and consider how thinking probabilistically might impact the decisions made in those situations.

Discussion

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Assign each group a scenario to discuss. They should explore how probabilities affect the decision-making process, potential risks, and the rationale behind their decisions.
  • Encourage groups to think about how different probabilities can lead to varying choices.
  • Have each group share their scenario and insights with the class.
  • Facilitate a class discussion about the various ways thinking probabilistically impacts decision-making and how it helps individuals navigate uncertainty.

Reflect (5 minutes):

Journal Entry

  • Instruct students to take a few moments to individually reflect on a situation from their lives where thinking probabilistically would have been beneficial.
  • They can consider instances where they made predictions, assessed risks, or evaluated potential outcomes.
