Setting Achievable and Realistic Goals with Action Plans

  • How to set achievable and realistic goals and then to develop action plans

SMART Goals slides

Activity 1 (30 Minutes)

  • Provide examples of goals that meet the SMART criteria (e.g., “Lose 10 pounds in 3 months” or “Complete a 5K run in 8 weeks”).
  • Break students into pairs and have them work together to assess the SMART criteria for a short term goal they set individually.

Explain that an action plan outlines the steps required to achieve a goal and ensures a systematic approach.

Introduce the concept of breaking down goals into smaller tasks or milestones.

  • Show an example of an action plan template on the board or projector.
  • Provide handouts with blank action plan templates to each student.
  • Walk students through the process of creating an action plan for a goal they have in mind. Emphasize the importance of identifying specific tasks, deadlines, and resources needed.
  • Allow students time to complete their action plans for their short term goal individually.

Discussion (5 Minutes)

  • Have a few volunteers share their goals and action plans with the class.
  • Discuss common challenges students faced while setting goals or creating action plans.
  • Encourage students to offer suggestions and solutions to overcome those challenges.

Reflect (10 minutes):

Journal Entry

  • Ask students to reflect on what they’ve learned about setting achievable goals and creating action plans.
  • Have them identify one long term goal they want to achieve and outline a brief action plan for it using the SMART criteria.
