Lesson Plan

Risk-based Decisions

  • Analyzing potential consequences and mitigating risks
  • Developing strategies for making informed risk-based decisions

Students will learn to evaluate risks and benefits systematically, developing skills in analyzing potential consequences and crafting mitigation strategies. Through practical scenarios and group discussions, they will gain confidence in making thoughtful decisions that balance opportunities with potential downsides.

SD.7-Reflect on and evaluate a decision-making process, and compare the quality of the process with the quality of the outcome.

TP.5-Use probabilistic thinking to weigh decision options and their possible outcomes

Lesson:

Engage (10 minutes):

  • Begin with a brief discussion on what risks are and why they are a part of our everyday lives.
  • Define risk-based decisions: Choices that involve weighing potential benefits against potential drawbacks or negative outcomes.
  • Discuss examples of risk-based decisions, such as career choices, investments, and health-related decisions.

Apply (25 minutes):

Activity 1 (15 Minutes)

  1. Divide the class into small groups.
  2. Distribute handouts with risk-based decision scenarios to each group.
  3. Instruct groups to apply the strategies discussed to analyze the scenarios and come up with a well-informed decision.
  4. Each group presents their scenario, their analysis of risks and benefits, and the decision they would make.

Discussion and Reflection (10 minutes)

  1. Facilitate a class discussion about the decision scenarios and the strategies used by each group.
  2. Ask students to share any challenges they encountered during the activity and how they overcame them.
  3. Emphasize the importance of making well-informed decisions that consider potential risks.

Reflect (5 minutes):

Journal Entry

  • Have each student think of a recent decision they made that involved risks.
  • Ask them to jot down which strategy or strategies they used to make that decision.
