Angela McIver, Ph.D.
Trapezium Math Founder, Member of Board of the After School Activities Partnership, Former Philadelphia School Board Member
In much the same way that we need to help students develop a fluency for math at a young age, we must also focus on ways to deliver decision-making skills and dispositions to them so that they can proactively improve their lives.
As a former middle school math teacher, Angela received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied how children learn math. She recognized that increasingly, elementary math was being consigned to computer-based instruction where children “learn” math in isolation and without teacher intervention or support. Angela created Trapezium Math as an antidote, with incredibly engaging, hands-on, differentiated learning opportunities in which students participate in groups. This scalable, group-learning math system provides highly-differentiated instruction for every type of learner. In addition to Trapezium Math, Angela has worked tirelessly to increase the number of underrepresented students and girls in high-level math classes in middle school and beyond. She was appointed by the Mayor to the Philadelphia School Board where she served from 2018-2021. Presently, Angela serves on the Board of the After School Activities Partnership and on the Education Advisory Council for the Alliance for Decision Education.
