Deputy Director of Development

Position Description

The Deputy Director of Development will build and execute all operational elements of a newly formed Development Department for the Alliance. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Relationships, this role will focus on the internal work and processes that drive philanthropic revenue for the Alliance and support the growth of the Development program over the long term. With emphasis on building operations and planning for growth, this role will work collaboratively with team members across the organization and manage a growing Development staff. As a major support to the Director of Strategic Relationships, this role will participate in strategy development for both the department and top level prospects. This role will also develop and manage a pipeline of foundation prospects.  

Responsibilities

  • Philanthropic Strategy and Culture 
    • Serve as thought partner to Director of Strategic Relationships on building and executing the Alliance Development plan 
    • Foster a culture of philanthropy, with focus on growing a pipeline of donors, giving levels, and mission alignment
    • Interface with Board members, donors, Advisory Council members, and other essential stakeholders to drive forward key Development initiatives 
  • Operations and Infrastructure
    • Develop and implement best-practice policies and guide operations and growth of the Development program, including:
      • Donor privacy, gift acceptance, endowment, and public disclosures
      • Prospect and donor management across all Development initiatives, including gift recording, acknowledgements, and stewardship reporting 
    • Oversee donor data with accuracy, confidentiality, and efficiency; ensure data management supports the needs of all aspects of the Development program
    • Effectively develop and put into practice the use of fundraising reports and metrics to drive accountability and fundraising success
    • Establish and oversee prospect research and scoring processes to support a robust major gifts pipeline 
    • Maintain and enhance presence to maximize the Alliance’s profile on online websites evaluating philanthropic impact, policies, and processes (e.g. GuideStar, Charity Navigator)
    • Manage the oversight for compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and laws
    • Work with the Director of Strategic Relationships and the Executive Director on the development of a planned giving program; develop gift acceptance policies in accordance with regulatory guidelines for various giving vehicles that include, but are not limited to, real estate, trusts, annuities, and bequest intentions 
  • Management
    • Directly manage Development team members, which currently includes a Development Associate
    • Work with the Director of Strategic Relationships as the Development staff grows to determine Development staffing needs, participate in recruitment, and manage appropriate staff
    • Support and promote a culture of professional development, growth, and learning for Development staff and all Alliance team members
  • Donor and Prospect Engagement
    • Work with the Director of Strategic Relationships to develop and activate engagement pathways for all Alliance constituents
    • Strengthen opportunities to leverage, influence, and ultimately solicit gifts, including developing a stewardship strategy to increase the support base and deepen commitment levels 
    • Serve as the leader for all Development events from inception to execution; ensure the events are designed to support moves management strategies; manage team members (Development and other department staff) to successfully plan and execute events
    • Oversee the execution of all donor communications including mid-year and annual donor reports, cases for support, and related Development collateral; work with the Development Associate and Alliance team members to produce these communications pieces with a creative approach, within budget, and on time
  • Pipeline Development and Support
    • Develop and manage a foundation prospect pipeline aligned with the Alliance’s strategic priorities; work directly with the Director of Strategic Relationships to develop solicitation strategies and define leadership roles with key prospects
    • Oversee grant submission and reporting processes for foundations in the prospect pipeline; work with appropriate Alliance team members to prepare and submit all grant applications and reports 
    • Interact and communicate with major donors, volunteers, prospects, VIPs, and Alliance partners in person, by phone, and by email; step in for the Director of Strategic Relationships on important prospect and donor related affairs, as needed; support and partner with the Executive Director as needed in such circumstances

Qualifications

The Alliance for Decision Education is seeking an experienced and talented Deputy Director of Development. Qualifications of an ideal candidate include:

  • At least 8-10 years of Development leadership experience with demonstrated outcomes in revenue growth, process improvement, and pipeline development
  • At least three years in a leadership development role (e.g. Director of Development, Assistant/Associate/Deputy Director of Development) with at least one institution

Experience in the following areas:

  • Building and growing Development infrastructure and operations for a small to midsize nonprofit organization  
  • Managing Development staff to drive toward fundraising and organizational goals
  • Initiating, planning, and managing fundraising and donor engagement events to achieve revenue goals and moves management strategies 
  • Implementing data-informed process improvement strategies to achieve goals 
  • Writing, prioritizing, accounting, and managing donor funds
  • Working alongside senior leaders in the organization and serving as lead Development staff to support the Board and/or event committees
  • Managing a pipeline of major donors, preferably foundations, from identification through cultivation to solicitation

Skills and Attributes:

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, including the ability to identify and resolve issues that impact institutional needs and priorities 
  • Strong solicitation and stewardship writing skills (i.e., annual appeal letters, donor stewardship reports, grant proposals)
  • Open, transparent, and professional communication skills both internally and externally to potential donors, supporters, and key stakeholders
  • Demonstration of good judgment, professionalism, and the highest standards of ethical conduct
  • Energetic and results-oriented with the ability to pivot effectively between projects while remaining focused on priorities and goals
  • Positive presence in the office, great team builder
  • Ability and willingness to adapt and be flexible
  • Experience or interest in education and/or cognitive science is a plus
